Northrhine-Westfalia Research Cooperative Traffic Simulation and Impacts on the Environment (NRW-FVU)

Welcome to the WWW-server of the Nordrhein-Westfalen Research Cooperative Traffic Simulation and Impacts on the Environment (NRW-FVU). Diesen Text in Deutsch können Sie hier finden.

You'll find a short description of the aims and organisation of the NRW-FVU in this document, the names of the groups working within this cooperative and links to other WWW-servers that are related to traffic and transport.

INTRO

Our social and economic life is based upon the communication between humans and the exchange of goods, thus causing traffic. We associate with this mobility the (positive) effects of individual, nearly unlimited freedom of movement. However, we also associate with this mobility the negative impacts of decreasing live quality: humans and nature are endangered by traffic accidents, traffic noise, dust and pollutants.

The traffic resulting from the needs for mobility is a current topic in different sciences, which work mostly independent of each other. In order to bring the different ideas, experiences and techniques together to create a new, combined " traffic model ", it is necessary to have different faculties work together interdisciplinarily. This is one of the aims of the research cooperative.

AIMS OF THE RESEARCH COOPERATIVE

is the simulation - using parallel computers - of the traffic in the german federal state Nordrhein-Westfalen under real-time conditions. Such a simulation tool will serve as the basis for investigating different scenarios of traffic control strategies.

FUNDING

The NRW-FVU is funded mainly by the Nordrhein-Westfalen Ministry of Science, and by the Northrhine-Westfalia Ministry of Urban Development, Culture and Sports.

ORGANISATION

The NRW-FVU is composed of several institutes from different universities in Nordrhein-Westfalen, which work in the fields traffic and transport, mathematics and physics, and certain engineering sciences, together with other groups from the administration and research institutes. The coordination of the NRW-FVU is with the Center of Parallel Computing.

WORKSHOP

From september the 30th to october the 2nd 1998 there will be the

Workshop "Traffic and Mobility"

at ika RWTH Aachen, where the results of the FVU will be presented.

RESULTS AND PROJECTS

A number of results have been obtained during the last two years:

Online traffic simulation Duisburg

Real-time simulation of Germany

Comparison with static assignment

The project currently under investigation is the simulation of the town of Wuppertal. More information can be found on the following page(s), including a movie of a microsimulation of Wuppertal:
